Upon receiving a call from her family’s lawyer, Cuthbert Crawley, Velma learns of her inheritance: her great uncle’s castle in Transylvania, Pennsylvania. Despite her friends’ confusion, Velma turns down the offer at Mr. Crawley’s office due to their strained relationship with her late uncle. However, Mr. Crawley reveals a curse on the estate and sympathizes with Velma’s situation. As they leave the office, Fred hears a noise coming from their van which then explodes as a mysterious masked figure appears. Mr. Crawley explains that it is the ghost of Baron, Velma’s ancestor. The van explodes once more with a warning about staying away from Transylvania; but despite this warning, Fred insists on going there to find whoever is responsible for damaging their vehicle.
Forced onto the express, the gang is left with no choice. Pressured by her companions, Velma reveals her true last name – Von Dinkenstein. She has a hunch that the ghost haunting them may be her ancestor, Baron Von Dinkenstein. Legend has it that he once created a monster that served as inspiration for Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The train suddenly picks up speed and the group must hurry to the last car for safety. Shaggy heads towards the front of the train, only to encounter the ghostly form of Baron Von Dinkenstein who destroys the control panel before vanishing. Despite this obstacle, they are able to save themselves and their fellow passengers as they reach safety just in time before the train derails and explodes into a nearby clock tower. As they arrive in town, Inspector Krunch introduces himself along with Burgermeister and Iago. They are then taken to a castle where they meet Mrs. Vanders, the housekeeper.
