In Scooby-Doo! Shaggy’s Showdown (2017), an animated western comedy mystery, the Mystery Gang is invited by Shaggy’s distant cousin Tawny to her ranch in Sorghum City. The town has been dealing with vandalism by someone believed to be the ghost of Dapper Jack Rogers, who happens to be Shaggy and Tawny’s ancestor. When the gang arrives, they are mistaken for Dapper Jack due to their similar appearance. Tawny and her neighbor Rafe show the gang a picture of Jack and share the legend surrounding him – a former horseman turned outlaw who wore bandanna masks while committing crimes. According to the legend, he was killed in the desert by Sheriff Rufus Carmichael; however, this story has brought tourists to the town until recently when ghostly attacks began driving people away.
The gang decides to confront Jack at the ranch, where they encounter their fellow guests. These include preteen musician Buddy G and his family, who unfortunately suffer from equinophobia. That evening, Dapper Jack appears, firing green flames from his gun before making a swift escape. Upon further investigation, Fred discovers traces of boric acid, which was likely responsible for the unusual color of the flames. Tawny explains that the Black Rattler Land Company has been buying up foreclosed businesses in the area after they were driven out by the ghost’s antics. Even her own ranch is now at risk of suffering a similar fate. In an attempt to lift their spirits and take their minds off recent events, ranch hands Larry and Kyle decide to teach some of the guests how to rope and ride horses. However, poor Buddy is too afraid to give it a try. Despite initial difficulties, Shaggy surprisingly turns out to be a natural horse rider. As for Velma, she has a severe horse dander allergy and therefore opts to leave with Daphne to explore a local museum instead.
