This sequel to 2018’s Black Panther is the 30th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). T’Challa, ruler of Wakanda, is suffering from a terminal illness that his sister Shuri believes can be cured with the “heart-shaped herb”. Despite Shuri’s attempts to recreate the herb after it was destroyed by Erik Killmonger, she is unable to do so before T’Challa’s death.
A year later, the pressure is on for Wakanda to share its precious vibranium with other nations. Attempts have been made to steal it by force, creating tension within the country. Queen Ramonda urges Shuri to continue her herb research in order to create a new Black Panther who can protect Wakanda. However, Shuri declines, citing her belief that the Black Panther is a relic of the past. Meanwhile, in the Atlantic Ocean, the CIA and U.S. Navy SEALs use a vibranium detector in hopes of locating an underwater deposit. Their expedition is swiftly halted by a group of blue-skinned, water-breathing superhumans under Namor’s leadership. The CIA holds Wakanda accountable for this deadly encounter, leading Namor to confront Queen Ramonda and Shuri directly. Ignoring Wakanda’s advanced security measures, Namor demands that they hand over whoever was responsible for the vibranium detector or face his wrath as punishment for entering into a vibranium ‘race’.
