A film Black Widow (2021), based on Marvel Comics, follows the titular character as she navigates a complex web of espionage and betrayal. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 24th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In 1995, undercover agents Alexei Shostakov and Melina Vostokoff pose as a family in Ohio with “daughters” Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova. Their mission: to steal S.H.I.E.L.D. intel and flee to Cuba where their boss, General Dreykov, trains Romanoff and Belova to become deadly Widows. In the years that follow, Shostakov is imprisoned while Romanoff and Belova rise within the ranks as feared assassins. However, after aiding Clint Barton in bombing Dreykov’s Budapest office, Romanoff defects to S.H.I.E.L.D., seemingly killing both Dreykov and his young daughter Antonia.
In 2016, Romanoff becomes a wanted fugitive after breaking the Sokovia Accords. She manages to run away from Thaddeus Ross, the US Secretary of State, and takes refuge in a safehouse in Norway thanks to help from Rick Mason. While all this is happening, Belova eliminates a rogue former Widow but is exposed to a synthetic gas that neutralizes the Red Room’s brainwashing agent. She then sends antidote vials to Romanoff with the hope of freeing other Widows and goes into hiding. Later on, Romanoff unknowingly takes off with the vials in her car only to be attacked by Taskmaster, a Red Room agent. After narrowly escaping, she discovers that the vials originated from Budapest. This leads her to Belova who reveals that Dreykov is not dead and the Red Room is still operating. In their search for Mason’s help and a helicopter he can provide, they are ambushed by both Widows and Taskmaster but manage to escape and meet up with him as planned.
