Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) is an American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is the fifth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures. In the present day, a group of scientists in the Arctic uncover a frozen aircraft and its occupant. However, in March 1942 during World War II, Nazi lieutenant general Johann Schmidt and his men manage to steal a powerful relic known as the Tesseract from German-occupied Norway. Meanwhile, in New York City, Steve Rogers’ attempts to join the U.S. Army are repeatedly rejected due to his health issues. However, after attending an exhibition with his best friend Bucky Barnes and expressing his desire to serve his country, Rogers is given a chance by Dr. Abraham Erskine to enlist in the Strategic Scientific Reserve for a ‘super-soldier’ experiment under Colonel Chester Phillips and British MI6 agent Peggy Carter.
Despite Phillips’ initial doubts about Erskine’s recommendation of Rogers for the procedure, he changes his mind when he witnesses Rogers bravely throwing himself onto a grenade to protect his fellow soldiers. Little did he know that this act was actually a test. The night before the treatment, Erskine discloses to Rogers that Schmidt had stolen an early version of the formula and used it on himself, resulting in permanent side-effects. Meanwhile, Schmidt and Dr. Arnim Zola plan to harness the power of the Tesseract in order to fuel their inventions and change the world through a powerful attack. However, Schmidt discovers Erskine’s whereabouts and sends assassin Heinz Kruger – disguised as State Department representative Fred Clemson – to eliminate him.
