The film Doctor Strange (2016) is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it joins the ranks of the 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Kathmandu, sorcerer Kaecilius and his zealots viciously attack Kamar-Taj, home to the Ancient One who has trained all its students in mystical arts including Kaecilius himself. The Ancient One attempts to catch the traitors but they manage to escape. Meanwhile, in New York City, renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange is involved in a car accident which renders his hands unusable for surgery. His colleague Christine Palmer tries to help him move on, but he stubbornly pursues experimental procedures in an effort to regain use of his hands.

Strange discovers Jonathan Pangborn, a paraplegic who inexplicably regained use of his legs. He is referred to Kamar-Taj by Pangborn, where Mordo, one of the Ancient One’s sorcerers, takes him in. The Ancient One impresses Strange with her abilities, showcasing the astral plane and other dimensions like the Mirror Dimension. Although hesitant at first, she agrees to train Strange despite seeing shades of Kaecilius in his hubris and drive. Under the guidance of both the Ancient One and Mordo, Strange delves into ancient texts found in the heavily guarded library overseen by Master Wong. From these teachings, he discovers that Earth is safeguarded from extraterrestrial threats through a shield generated by three Sanctums strategically located in New York City, London, and Hong Kong – all within easy reach from Kamar-Taj.
