Eternals (2021)

Eternals (2021), an American superhero film, is based on the Marvel Comics race of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 26th addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In 5000 BC, Arishem, a Celestial, sends ten superpowered beings known as Eternals- Ajak, Sersi, Ikaris, Kingo, Sprite, Phastos, Makkari, Druig, Gilgamesh and Thena- on the starship Domo to Earth. Their mission: exterminate invasive entities called Deviants. The last of these Deviants are believed to be eliminated in 1521. However, differing opinions within the group cause them to question their relationship with humankind. For the next five hundred years they mostly live separately while awaiting orders from Arishem. In present times, Sersi resides in London with Sprite. Suffering from Ikaris’ unexplained departure centuries ago, she is now in a relationship with human Dane Whitman who works at the Natural History Museum.

After fending off an attack from the Deviant Kro, Ikaris joins the trio as they journey to South Dakota to meet with their leader, Ajak. Unfortunately, upon arrival, they discover that she has passed away. In a surprising twist, Ajak posthumously selects Sersi as her successor and grants her the ability to communicate with Arishem. Through this communication, Sersi learns that the Eternals’ true mission was to prepare Earth for the Emergence of a new Celestial. Arishem reveals that he has been planting Celestial seeds on planets for millions of years in order for new Celestials to be born. The Deviants were originally tasked with eliminating apex predators on each planet to ensure the development of intelligent life. However, when they turned on the planet’s inhabitants, Arishem created the Eternals as a countermeasure.
