It was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures, making it the first installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tony Stark has taken over his father’s company, Stark Industries, and is in Afghanistan with his friend and military liaison, Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes, to showcase their new ‘Jericho’ missile. However, during the demonstration, Stark’s convoy is attacked with a missile from their own company and he is gravely injured. The attackers are members of a terrorist group called the Ten Rings who hold him captive in a cave. To prevent the shrapnel from reaching his heart and killing him, fellow captive and doctor Yinsen puts an electromagnet in Stark’s chest. The leader of the Ten Rings, Raza, offers to release Stark if he builds a Jericho missile for them. But both Stark and Yinsen doubt Raza’s sincerity in keeping his promise.
In secret, Stark and Yinsen construct an arc reactor to power the electromagnet and a prototype suit of powered armor, which they plan to use for their escape. However, their plans are thwarted when the Ten Rings attack their workshop after discovering their intentions. In order to buy time, Yinsen sacrifices himself while the suit charges up. Once fully equipped, Stark uses the armor to fight his way out of the cave and comes across a dying Yinsen. He then destroys the weapons belonging to the Ten Rings before taking flight and ultimately crashing in the desert, resulting in the destruction of the suit. Following his rescue by Rhodes, Stark returns home and makes a public announcement that his company will no longer produce weapons. This decision is met with opposition from Obadiah Stane, his late father’s business partner and current manager of Stark Industries who warns him about potential financial consequences and the impact on his father’s legacy.
