The American animated film, Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders (2000), follows a group on their search for alien lifeforms at the SALF station. As they receive a loud reading that suddenly disappears, Max, Laura, and Steve pick up something strange on the radar. This leads them to a desert where the Mystery Machine takes a wrong turn into government property during a sandstorm. The van crashes in a small town after Shaggy mistakes a UFO for a turn signal. While Shaggy and Scooby-Doo stay with the van, the rest of the gang seeks help at a nearby diner. However, Shaggy and Scooby’s encounter with two aliens leaves them in panic as they seek refuge in the diner. Although waitress Dottie denies ever seeing aliens, she does admit to witnessing strange lights and sounds at night. Chef Sergio adds that cattle have mysteriously disappeared from the area and drove people away from town. Lester, who claims to have been abducted before, even has photographic evidence to support his story.
The gang visits his house to view some paintings by Lester. Afterward, Lester kindly offers them a place to spend the night. While sleeping on the roof, Scooby and Shaggy are suddenly taken by the aliens. They try to escape but are soon surrounded. The next morning, a hippy photographer named Crystal and her dog Amber rescue them and take them back to the diner. The group then heads to Buck, the local mechanic, for help with their vehicle. Along the way, they meet Max again before Crystal and Amber show up once more. Velma becomes suspicious when she sees dried mud on their boots, considering they are in the desert. Later on, she leads them to a canyon in search of a river. Although it turns out to be dry, they discover mining equipment and gold in nearby caves.
