Superman: Unbound (2013) is an animated direct-to-video superhero film based on the 2008 comic book story arc Superman: Brainiac by Geoff Johns. The 17th installment in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies, it debuted with a preview attached to Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2. In an aerial clash between terrorist captors and Supergirl, Lois Lane becomes a hostage and calls for Superman’s help. While trying to persuade Clark Kent to go public with their relationship despite his concerns, Lois is interrupted by a Daily Planet meeting. Shortly after, Clark responds to an alert about an incoming meteor. He intercepts the object and discovers it is actually a robot which he quickly defeats before taking it to his Fortress of Solitude.

With the assistance of Supergirl, Superman discovers that the robot is controlled by Brainiac, a highly enhanced being from the planet Colu. With his muscular physique, red eyes, and computer-like parts, Brainiac possesses abilities similar to Superman’s. Supergirl is terrified at the sight of Brainiac’s robot and shares her encounter with the creature. She explains how Brainiac had previously taken and shrunken Krypton’s capital city, where her parents were trying to find him before losing communication with their home planet. Now, she fears that Earth may suffer the same fate at the hands of Brainiac. Concerned about future drone attacks, Superman travels through space in a Kryptonian spacecraft in search of Brainiac. Eventually, he locates Brainiac’s drones attacking another planet. Despite his efforts to stop them, Superman witnesses as Brainiac captures the planet’s capital city and fires a missile into its sun, resulting in its destruction.
