The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) is a television miniseries on Disney+, created by Malcolm Spellman. Based on Marvel Comics, the show follows Sam Wilson, also known as Falcon, and Bucky Barnes, aka Winter Soldier. It is the second Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series produced by Marvel Studios and shares continuity with the franchise’s films. The story takes place six months after Wilson becomes Captain America in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Together, Wilson and Barnes work to stop anti-patriots who prefer the world during the Blip. Spellman wrote the series while Kari Skogland directed it. In September 2018, Marvel Studios began developing various limited series for Disney+, including one featuring Wilson and Barnes from the MCU films. Spellman joined in October and chose to explore themes of race and politics surrounding Wilson taking on Captain America’s role as a Black man. The show was officially announced in April 2019 when actors Stan and Mackie were confirmed as leads. Skogland was hired shortly after to direct.

Principal photography for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier began in October 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to the Czech Republic in March 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was temporarily halted but later resumed in Atlanta in September before wrapping up in the Czech Republic in October. The highly-anticipated series premiered on March 19, 2021, as part of Phase Four of the MCU and ran for six episodes until April 23. It garnered positive reviews from critics who praised the chemistry between the actors and its social commentary, while noting its pacing as a drawback. Thanks to its success, it received several accolades including five Primetime Emmy Award nominations. As a continuation of the series, a feature film titled Captain America: Brave New World (2025), co-written by Spellman, is currently in development. Set six months after taking over as Captain America at the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Sam Wilson teams up with Bucky Barnes on a global mission to thwart an extremist group known as the Flag Smashers who are using a recreated version of the Super Soldier Serum and have a misguided belief that life was better during ‘the Blip’.
