The American superhero film, The Incredible Hulk (2008), is based on the Marvel Comics character and marks the second installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At Virginia’s Culver University, General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross meets with Dr. Bruce Banner, who happens to be his daughter Betty’s colleague and boyfriend. Ross discusses an experiment that is meant to make humans immune to gamma radiation, part of a World War II-era ‘super soldier’ program he wishes to revive. Unfortunately, the experiment fails and Banner is exposed to gamma radiation causing him to transform into the Hulk whenever his heart rate rises above 200 beats per minute. The resulting destruction at the lab leads Banner to become a fugitive from both Ross and the U.S. military as they both seek to weaponize the uncontrollable Hulk.

Five years down the line, Banner now finds himself employed at a bottling factory in Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as he continues his quest for a cure to his condition. Through online collaboration with an unknown associate called ‘Mr. Blue’, he hones his Yoga skills to maintain control and has remained untransformed for the past five months. However, one day while working, Banner accidentally cuts his finger, causing a drop of his blood to fall into a bottle which is later consumed by an elderly individual in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This results in the unsuspecting consumer developing gamma sickness. Upon learning of this incident, Ross utilizes the bottle as a means to trace Banner’s whereabouts and sends a specialized team led by Emil Blonsky to capture him. Despite transformation into the Hulk and successfully defeating Blonsky’s team, Blonsky himself survives.
