Thor (2011) is an American superhero movie centered around the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The film was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures, making it the fourth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story takes place in 965 AD, where Odin, king of Asgard, leads a battle against the Frost Giants of Jotunheim and their leader Laufey to protect the Nine Realms from their conquest plans. After defeating them and taking control of their source of power, the Casket of Ancient Winters, Thor’s father prepares to pass down his throne. However, this process is disrupted when Loki secretly allows Frost Giants into Asgard to retrieve the Casket. Defying his father’s orders, Thor sets off to Jotunheim with Loki, Sif and childhood friends Volstagg, Fandral and Hogun.

A fierce fight breaks out until Odin steps in to save his people, causing tension between Asgardians and Frost Giants once again. Due to Thor’s arrogance, Odin strips his son of his godly power and exiles him to Earth as a mortal. Accompanied by his hammer Mjölnir, protected by an enchantment that only allows the worthy to wield it, Thor arrives in New Mexico. There, he is discovered by astrophysicist Dr. Jane Foster, her assistant Darcy Lewis, and mentor Dr. Erik Selvig. As the local populace finds Mjölnir and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson takes possession of it, he also obtains Foster’s data on the wormhole that brought Thor to Earth. Unable to retrieve his hammer from S.H.I.E.L.D.’s facility, Thor is captured and ultimately released with the help of Selvig. He then resigns himself to his exile on Earth and begins a romance with Foster.
