Thor: Ragnarok (2017) is an American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 17th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Thor (2011) and Thor: The Dark World (2013). The story takes place two years after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and finds Thor facing new challenges as he searches for the powerful Infinity Stones. After being dumped by his love interest Jane (albeit mutually), Thor is captured and brought before Surtur, a fearsome fire demon who believes his destiny is to bring about Ragnarok – the destruction of Asgard. In an effort to learn the whereabouts of his father Odin, who is not on Asgard as previously thought, Thor uses Mjolnir, his trusty hammer, to defeat Surtur and secure his crown/skull – the source of the demon’s power.
After sending Surtur’s skull to the vaults, Thor returns to Asgard and discovers that Heimdall has been replaced as sentry of the Bifrost Bridge by Skurge. According to Skurge, Odin accused Heimdall of treachery and he fled, leaving his whereabouts unknown. In Asgard, Thor notices a large statue of Loki and finds Odin enjoying a play about Loki’s supposed heroic sacrifice against the Dark Elves. Realizing that Loki had disguised himself as Odin, Thor confronts him and demands to know what happened to their father. It is revealed that Loki placed Odin under a spell and left him in a retirement home in New York City.
