Thor: The Dark World (2013), an American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character, brings us back to the world of Asgard. This film is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Serving as a sequel to Thor (2011) and the eighth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it tells the story of an ancient clash between Bor, Odin’s father, and Malekith—the Dark Elf who seeks to unleash the Aether on the Nine Realms. After defeating Malekith and his powerful army, including warriors known as Kursed, Bor sends the Aether to a hidden world beyond anyone’s reach. However, what he doesn’t know is that Malekith escapes with his lieutenant Algrim and only a few Dark Elves. Fast-forward to present-day Asgard where Loki is imprisoned for his crimes on Earth. Meanwhile, Thor and his companions are busy defending Vanaheim from attackers as they continue to rebuild the Bifröst—the Rainbow Bridge destroyed two years prior.

The Asgardians discover that the Convergence, a rare alignment of the Nine Realms, is approaching. As portals between worlds begin to appear at random, astrophysicist Dr. Jane Foster ventures to an abandoned factory in London where such portals have opened. She is transported to a hidden realm where she becomes the host for the Aether. Thor comes across Foster and brings her to Asgard, where Odin issues a warning about the Aether’s dangerous powers and its connection to a dire prophecy. Malekith, stirred by the Aether’s release, attacks Asgard in search of Foster. Tragically, Thor’s mother Frigga is slain while shielding her. In order to seek revenge on Malekith for their mother’s death, Thor enlists the help of Loki who knows of a secret portal to Svartalfheim where they plan to confront their enemy head on.
