WandaVision (2021) is an American television miniseries created by Jac Schaeffer for Disney+. Based on Marvel Comics characters Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch and Vision, it marks the first TV series produced by Marvel Studios within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), the show follows Wanda and Vision in their suburban life in Westview, New Jersey. Their reality is thrown into a whirlwind of sitcom homages and television tropes spanning different decades. With Schaeffer as head writer and Matt Shakman as director, production began in November 2019 using era-appropriate sets, costumes, and effects to pay tribute to various sitcom styles. The series was officially announced in April 2019 after Olsen and Bettany were confirmed to reprise their roles. Production halted in March 2020 due to COVID-19 but resumed in September 2020 in Los Angeles before wrapping up that November.
Premiering on January 15, 2021 and running for nine episodes until March 5, WandaVision marked the first series of Phase Four in the MCU. Thoroughly praised by critics for its nods to classic sitcoms and stellar performances from the likes of Olsen, Bettany, and Hahn, the series also faced some criticism for its finale. Nevertheless, it sparked widespread discussion among fans with its exploration of popular theories and themes of grief and nostalgia. The show has received numerous accolades, including a whopping 23 Primetime Emmy Award nominations with three wins. Olsen’s character, Wanda Maximoff, continued her story in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), while two spin-off series centered on Hahn’s Agatha Harkness and Bettany’s Vision are currently in development: Agatha: Darkhold Diaries and Vision Quest, respectively. Set three weeks after the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Wanda and Vision find themselves living a seemingly perfect life in Westview, New Jersey, but as they begin to experience different time periods and TV tropes, they start to question their reality.
